It should come as no surprise that exercise is an essential component of any weight loss program. The hard part is encouraging yourself enough to do it. This isn’t a problem that only affects those trying to lose weight. Athletes and those who really like to exercise have their “lazy” days too.
Below you’ll find a few simple ideas you can use to get yourself in the mood to work out. Don’t be surprised if these techniques are more effective than you think.
The Joy of Exercise
Exercising releases good feeling endorphins. Ever wonder why you feel really good after a great workout? That’s why. Runners experience this after a good run. It’s sometimes referred to as “the runner’s high”. These are the moments that you can look forward to. The instants when all the stress has left your body, you’re relaxed, and full of energy.
If you shift your attention to those feelings and keep it there for a moment or two, the anticipation of having those feelings at the end of exercising will be enough to get you motivated.
Just Get Going
Just like the famous athletic shoe brand that starts with an ” “N” states, “just do it”. Another way to get yourself going, is to just get started. Sometimes the best workouts come when you don’t feel like exercising, but you do it anyway. Not sure why that happens, but it does.
Nine times out of ten you’ll finish the workout, and be glad that you started in the first place.
The Power of Visual Thinking
Most times when we have a hard time getting motivated to do something, it’s because we’re focusing too much on the aspects that we don’t like. We’ll focus on being tired, or not having any time. One way to shift your thinking is to take a deep breath and imagine yourself actually exercising.
The key to this working, is that you have to see yourself as if you were working out right now. Look through your own eyes, so to speak, and see yourself performing the exercise. Feel your muscles as they’re contracting with the movement. Imagine the sweat rolling down your shoulder and dripping off your elbow. Feeling great because you know that with every movement you make, the fat is melting off.
On the surface, this technique may not seem like much, but it’s extremely effective. You can only focus on one thing at a time. So, if you’re busy visualizing yourself working out, you distract yourself from thinking negatively. Essentially, you’re exchanging negative thoughts for positive beneficial thoughts – which gets you in a better mood to work out.
Sometimes we just need a little push to get ourselves moving. That’s the purpose of these suggestions. Once you shift your momentum in the direction of working out, it’ll get easier to do – and you’ll be happy that you did.
